Unseasonably Cool Weekend with Minimal Rain Expected in Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. — Chief Meteorologist Tom Tasselmyer indicates that rain showers will have a minimal impact on Maryland this weekend, with only a slight chance of sprinkles.
As spring officially arrives, Marylanders can expect a brisk weekend with temperatures in the 60s, although occasional gusty winds may make it feel colder. Saturday will see mostly clear skies, but a weak weather disturbance is expected to bring a chance of light rain.
Currently, conditions across the state boast sunshine with temperatures reported at 55 degrees at the Stevensville Bay Bridge field. The humidity remains low at 29%, with west winds gusting up to 24 miles per hour. Peak gusts reached 46 mph at Camp David earlier in the day.
In Frederick County, temperatures hover around 48 degrees amidst brisk winds, while eastern areas like Annapolis and Forest Hill are slightly warmer at 54 and 53 degrees, respectively. Although these readings are somewhat cooler, they are in line with the seasonal norms.
The clear skies will allow temperatures to drop rapidly as the evening progresses, while increasing cloud coverage will usher in the disturbance moving across the Great Lakes toward New England.
This weather system could produce isolated rain showers or possibly snow showers in the northern Great Lakes, but precipitation will likely remain limited as it passes through Maryland on Saturday.
“There’s a slight chance for a pop-up sprinkle, but the overall expectation is for a dry weekend,” said Tasselmyer. “We’re really moisture-starved right now.”
According to forecasters, the next significant rain event is associated with a system currently moving through the Pacific Northwest. This front is not expected to reach the Maryland area until Monday.
Tomorrow morning, temperatures are anticipated to start in the low 30s, moving into the mid-60s later in the day with a 20% chance for a brief sprinkle. Winds will continue to be a factor, potentially gusting to 30 miles an hour amidst partly cloudy conditions.
Areas such as Cumberland and Saint Mary’s City can expect highs of 59 and 66 degrees, respectively, while Ocean City will reach about 62 degrees.
As the weekend progresses, expect cool air to invade, particularly by Sunday, and look forward to the next best shot for rain arriving early next week.
