Chespirito’s Biopic Sparks Divided Opinions Among Original Cast

Mexico City, Mexico – The new biographical series about the late comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, known as Chespirito, has stirred significant controversy among members of the original cast from the 1970s television show.
Some actors, like Carlos Villagrán who played Quico, have voiced their disapproval, stating they were not contacted regarding the project. Villagrán expressed his concerns by saying, “I know many lies will be told, but I can’t comment further out of respect for Roberto Gómez Bolaños, who has passed away.”
The series, titled “Chespirito: Sin Querer Queriendo,” is produced by Gómez Bolaños’ children, Roberto Gómez Fernández and Paulina Gómez Fernández. It includes untold stories and details about their father’s life. The first two episodes have already premiered, and the third will be released on June 19 through HBO Max.
Florinda Meza, who was Gómez Bolaños’ wife and long-time collaborator, has also raised concerns. Although she has yet to view the series, she has criticized it for not representing the truth of her late husband’s life. Meza stated, “This series does not treat me with respect and much less with truth. I am not content, but I respect their right to honor their father.”
In one of her statements, Meza dismissed dramatized scenes, like the alleged antics involving wall jumps to impress executives, calling them fictional melodrama. “He was already successful before Chapulín Colorado and El Chavo del Ocho,” she emphasized.
Edgar Vivar, who played the beloved character Señor Barriga, also commented on the series. He mentioned he was consulted as an advisor but clarified that decisions regarding the inclusion of other cast members were made by production. Vivar stated, “I was called to advise on how things unfolded, but it wasn’t my choice who was included.”
Amidst the various reactions, the legacy of Gómez Bolaños continues to be a vital topic of discussion. The ongoing release of the series brings a mix of nostalgia, criticism, and reflection on the impact of Chespirito on Latin American television.
The biopic remains a source of tension as it unfolds, with many viewers expressing their opinions on social media that echo the sentiments of the original cast.
