Young Environmentalists in New Zealand Invited to Share Ideas through Growing for Good Grant Program
Woolworths is once again encouraging young environmental enthusiasts in Aotearoa to participate in the annual Growing for Good grant program. This initiative, now in its sixth year, inspires schools and students to present innovative environmental projects fostering positive change.
The programme offers a $50,000 grant pool this year, with $10,000 allocated to each winning project. Notable achievements from previous years include projects like Nelson Intermediate’s installation of rainwater tanks for sustainable irrigation during school breaks.
Sarah Johns, the STEAM Leader at Nelson Intermediate School, expressed satisfaction with the grant’s impact on raising students’ awareness of water conservation. The grant enabled the school to address the water crisis in their community through rainwater harvesting.
One of the students, Millie Moketapu, highlighted the project’s outcomes, emphasizing improved access to water for native plants and vegetable gardens, ensuring year-round food production for the community.
Mount Albert Grammar School was another success story, utilizing their grant to establish a vertical garden project for supplying produce to food technology classes.
Catherine Langabeer, Woolworths New Zealand’s Head of Sustainability, praised the creativity and dedication of young Kiwis participating in the Growing for Good program. She looks forward to witnessing the innovative projects that emerge in the sixth year of the initiative.
Applications for the grant program are open to primary, intermediate, secondary schools, and ECEs across Aotearoa from May 6, 2024, to June 2, 2024. Interested parties can apply at the official website of Countdown.
