Perry Mattfeld Stars as Coach in New Sports Comedy Series
LOS ANGELES, CA – Actress Perry Mattfeld is embracing her dual passions for football and acting in the new sports-comedy series, “Chad Powers,” where she plays assistant coach Ricky Hudson for the South Georgia Catfish football team. The series, inspired by an ESPN skit featuring Eli Manning, follows the journey of quarterback Russ Holliday, whose career is revived by joining the Catfish after a damaging mistake.
Mattfeld, known for her intense roles like portraying a blind woman in “In the Dark” and a heroin addict in “Long Bright River,” finds this role particularly exciting due to her background as an athlete and her marriage to NFL veteran Mark Sanchez. “When I read this script, I was like, the fact that my two worlds could be meeting together was amazing — that is what made this my dream role,” Mattfeld said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The show’s narrative cleverly juxtaposes the character of Ricky, who is striving for respect as a female coach, and Chad, played by Glen Powell, who disguises himself to join the team. “Ricky is a little bit isolated in her world, and she sees that Chad is somewhat isolated, and so they bond over being the odd ones in the bunch,” Mattfeld explained, hinting at the development of a strong friendship between the characters.
Mattfeld emphasizes her genuine connection to the sport, revealing that football has always been a significant part of her life. “I knew about the spoof. I do happen to be a football fan myself,” she recalls about the original skit. “Seeing all six episodes, even I was shocked. I cannot believe we made a show based on the skit.” The actress, who has a wealth of football knowledge thanks to her family life, credits her husband Sanchez for providing insight and support in her role.
Mark Sanchez, who was a first-round NFL draft pick, went so far as to consult for the show’s writers, ensuring the accuracy of the football scenes. Mattfeld noted, “Football is actually every day in our house, so there was definitely a genuine connection to the show and that was what pulled me for sure.” With new episodes of “Chad Powers” premiering weekly, viewers can expect an authentic and comedic representation of college football culture.
