LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Cameron Diaz‘s return to acting has made a splash on Netflix, with her new film “Back in Action” racking up 46.8 million views in its first three days. The movie, which debuted on Jan. 17, marks Diaz’s first major role in nearly a decade and has become the platform’s biggest English-language film opening since “The Adam Project” in March 2022.

Starring alongside Jamie Foxx, Diaz plays a retired spy forced back into action in the action-comedy. The film’s strong performance pushed other popular titles, including “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and “The Secret Life of Pets,” to second and third place in Netflix’s weekly rankings.

Diaz’s 2010 film “Knight and Day,” co-starring Tom Cruise, also saw a resurgence, landing at No. 4 on the English-language films list with 5.2 million views. Meanwhile, Netflix’s limited series “American Primeval” topped the English-language TV chart for the second week in a row, narrowly beating out the highly anticipated second season of “Squid Game.”

“Back in Action” is Diaz’s first film since her brief appearance in the 2014 remake of “Annie.” The actress, known for iconic roles in “There's Something About Mary” and “Charlie's Angels,” has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, focusing on her family. In a rare interview, Diaz described her time away from acting as “the best 10 years” of her life.

Netflix’s success with “Back in Action” underscores the platform’s ability to draw audiences with star-driven projects. The film’s strong opening also highlights Diaz’s enduring appeal, even after a lengthy hiatus from Hollywood.
