Club América Begins Quest for Fourth Consecutive Liga MX Title
Three-time defending Liga MX champion Club América kicks off its Clausura campaign with a match against Querétaro on Friday night at Estadio Corregidora. The match marks the start of América’s pursuit of an unprecedented fourth consecutive title since the league adopted a short tournament format in 1996.
Under head coach André Jardine, who recently turned down interest from Brazilian club Botafogo, Las Águilas aim to continue their dominance in Mexican soccer. América secured its third straight title last month, cementing its status as one of the most successful teams in Liga MX history.
Querétaro, meanwhile, enters the match under new leadership. After finishing 17th in the Apertura, the club appointed Benjamín Mora as head coach. Mora, a former assistant with Querétaro, most recently coached York United in the Canadian Premier League. He faces a tough challenge in his debut, as América defeated Querétaro 3-1 in their last meeting during the 2024 Apertura, thanks to a brace from Henry Martín.
The Estadio Corregidora is expected to be packed as fans eagerly anticipate the start of the Clausura season. América’s star-studded lineup, including Martín and other key players, will look to set the tone early in their title defense.
Friday’s match will also serve as a litmus test for Querétaro’s revamped squad under Mora. The team has made several offseason moves in an effort to improve its standing in the league, but facing the reigning champions in the opening match is a daunting task.
Liga MX’s Clausura tournament features 17 rounds of regular-season play, with the top teams advancing to the playoffs. América’s quest for a fourth consecutive title will be closely watched, as no team has achieved such a feat in the modern era of Mexican soccer.
