Colts Expect Daniel Jones to Return After Injury, Negotiations Ahead
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to return for the 2026 season despite suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in December. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared this outlook during an appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show‘
“I think they are banking on Daniel Jones being back,” Schefter said. “I do think they’ll re-sign him. I do think he’ll be ready for the start of the season.” Jones was injured during a Week 14 game against Jacksonville.
During his season with the Colts, Jones completed 68% of his passes with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions, showcasing his potential as a reliable starter. He ended the season with a passer rating of 100.2, setting several career highs.
Jones’s contract is set to expire in 2026, and while the Colts may want to keep him, negotiations could be complicated due to his injury. Schefter noted that determining the terms of a new contract, especially in regard to salary guarantees, would play a critical role in any re-signing efforts.
Additionally, the Colts face uncertainty in their coaching staff. Changes in management could affect the future plans for Jones. If head coach Shane Steichen, who has helped Jones significantly this season, remains with the team, it could strengthen the quarterback’s chances of staying.
The Colts’ recent trades and current roster situation complicate alternative options for replacing Jones, suggesting he is a key part of their future plans. Currently, they lack a clear upgrade at quarterback and have limited picks for the upcoming draft due to prior trades.
Although Jones’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, he may be ready for training camp or the start of the regular season. If re-signed, he is expected to be the centerpiece of the offense again, leading the Colts in a new bid for playoff contention.
