Douglas County Shooting Investigation

Authorities have disclosed further details and released video footage related to the death of an off-duty Atlanta police investigator in Douglas County, Georgia. The investigator, identified as Aubree Horton, was reportedly attempting to break into a home when he was shot by the homeowner.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:08 a.m. on Orkney Way in Winston. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner’s wife was leaving for work when she noticed unusual activity via notifications from her Ring doorbell camera. She promptly notified authorities by calling 911.

Body camera footage from the scene shows Horton, who was shirtless, running towards the house while shouting phrases such as “Jesus” and “Help me.” The video captures him slamming his body against the front door and later sitting on the home’s steps, seemingly in distress. The homeowner, upon hearing the commotion, approached the door armed for self-defense.

The sheriff’s office reported that Horton forcibly entered the home after the homeowner cracked the door open to assess the situation. “Fearing for his life and in defense of his home, the homeowner discharged a single round from his firearm, fatally wounding Horton,” stated officials. Authorities emphasized that there had been no prior acquaintance between Horton and the homeowner.

Initial investigations suggest that Horton might have been undergoing a “mental health episode or under the influence of narcotics.” Toxicology results are pending and are expected to take months. The investigation remains open as the sheriff’s office awaits crucial evidence, with some video portions redacted from public release.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed Horton’s identity, acknowledging his nearly decade-long service. Horton, assigned to the fugitive unit, was recently honored as “Investigator of the Year” at an annual event. Shock amongst the local community has been palpable, with residents like Milton Johnston describing the event as unexpected in their usually quiet neighborhood.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds noted that the investigation is active, and many details are still being explored. Until further evidence surfaces, no charges are anticipated against the homeowner, who acted in self-defense following a similar prior incident in 2021 prompting installation of security measures.
