Exploding Kittens Animated Series Premieres on Netflix
The animated series Exploding Kittens, based on the popular card game created by RIT alumnus Elan Lee ’98, has made its debut on Netflix as of July 12. With a nine-episode first season, viewers get to see the beloved characters from the game in a whole new light, alongside new additions to the quirky universe.
Elan Lee, the mastermind behind the game and an executive producer of the show, expressed that the initial goal of Exploding Kittens was to follow a storytelling model akin to Marvel‘s, focusing on engaging narratives. Each card in the game features a unique character, making the transition to animation an exciting prospect.
The game was originally launched in 2015, quickly gaining immense popularity and raising almost $9 million on Kickstarter within just 30 days. Since then, it has become a global sensation with over 40 million copies sold worldwide, leading to various adaptations and merchandise.
The Exploding Kittens animated comedy on Netflix explores an epic battle between good and evil as God and Satan take on feline forms to live among humans. The show stars Tom Ellis as Godcat and Sasheer Zamata as Devilcat, with Matthew Inman, alongside Shane Kosakowski, serving as showrunners.
Prior to its official release, a special screening of the first two episodes of the show was held, receiving rave reviews from attendees who found the humor and charm irresistible. Elan Lee, reflecting on the feedback, expressed his excitement for a wider audience to enjoy the series.
Elan Lee mentioned that his primary focus remains on his role as the CEO of the Exploding Kittens company, which has grown to employ 100 individuals. Over the past five years, the team has been dedicated to creating the show and related products, leading to the recent launch of the mobile game.
With plans to expand the Exploding Kittens universe, new games are in the works, including a tabletop game centered around sword fighting and a VR game offering a unique perspective on the game’s world. Additionally, the team is already underway with the production of the second season of the animated series.
