Former Patient Details Extreme Measures after Surgery in Al Muderis Defamation Case
A former patient of renowned orthopaedic surgeon Munjed Al Muderis testified in the Federal Court, recounting extreme measures taken after controversial surgery. Mark William Urquhart revealed his battle with excruciating pain and recurring infections on his leg stumps following osseointegration surgery.
Urquhart admitted to often refusing prescribed antibiotics, highlighting instances where he neglected treatment. Despite acknowledging the severity of infections, he disclosed his reluctance due to side effects, including stomach issues and vomiting.
Al Muderis is pursuing a defamation case against The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, and 60 Minutes, alleging the dissemination of defamatory claims regarding his surgical practices and patient care.
In his testimony, Urquhart expressed regret over undergoing the surgery, citing unforeseen complications that jeopardized his health. He emphasized the need for full disclosure of potential risks before consenting to the procedure.
During cross-examination, Urquhart disclosed an altercation with another patient, Brennan Smith, who allegedly inflicted injuries on him, including severing two fingers. The incident underscored the heightened tensions surrounding Al Muderis’ reputation and the ongoing court battle.
