DETROIT — The Milwaukee Bucks secured their playoff position on Friday with a 125-119 victory over the Detroit Pistons, driven by an exceptional performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time NBA MVP recorded his 11th triple-double of the season, boasting 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 15 assists at Little Caesars Arena.

As the Bucks clinched the East’s No. 5 seed, preparing for a rematch against the Indiana Pacers in the first round, Antetokounmpo demonstrated his dominance, particularly in the final stretch of the game. Teammate Kevin Porter Jr. expressed empathy for the Pistons, recalling his own experiences facing Antetokounmpo during previous seasons. “Every time we played the Bucks, it was like, ‘F–, we got Giannis,'” Porter said.

Antetokounmpo’s performance was marked by his ability to adjust quickly; he overcame early struggles to find his rhythm, hitting a crucial mid-range jumper that opened up his offensive arsenal. “It’s a blessing, honestly,” Porter continued. “What he’s able to do, if you see his work and what he’s dedicated to, it’s crazy.”

The Bucks’ star has notably upped his mid-range game, hitting 125 of his 266 attempts for a career-high 47 percent this season, per Cleaning the Glass. This refinement forces defenders to make difficult choices while trying to contain him.

Bucks head coach Doc Rivers commended Antetokounmpo’s playmaking ability, highlighting the significance of his 15 assists. “It just keeps getting unnoticed how well he’s passing the ball,” Rivers said. With the return of Bobby Portis from suspension, the Bucks have capitalized on effective lineups featuring Antetokounmpo and shooters like AJ Green and Gary Trent Jr.

“Everybody can shoot the ball,” Antetokounmpo noted about the lineup’s synergy. “So much space for us to operate.” The results have been undeniable; the combination produced a staggering net rating of plus-54.6 over their last three games.

In addition to his offensive prowess, Antetokounmpo also made critical defensive contributions, blocking two shots in the final minute of play against the Pistons. His assertion over both ends of the floor exemplifies why he is considered a top player in the league.

“If you really think about all the top players in the NBA right now that score the ball at a high rate, I really think I’m one of the best defensive players,” Antetokounmpo stated, emphasizing the challenge of maintaining high-level defense with such an offensive load.

With this victory, the Bucks improved to 47-34, contrasting their earlier challenges this season. Unlike last year, Antetokounmpo is healthier and playing some of his best basketball, which poses a formidable threat to any team they face in the postseason. As Rivers affirmed, “He’s doing everything. And that’s what’s so special about him.”
