High Court Orders Paedophile Former Pop Star to Pay £508,800 in Damages to Abuse Victim
Convicted sex offender Gary Glitter, also known as Paul Gadd, has been ordered by High Court Judge Mrs Justice Tipples to pay over £500,000 in damages to a victim he abused when she was just 12 years old.
The ruling stems from Glitter’s conviction in 2015 for abusing the claimant and two other young individuals between 1975 and 1980. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, secured a ‘default judgment’ in her favor against Gadd’s liability.
Mrs Justice Tipples, in a 13-page ruling, outlined that the woman has suffered immensely due to the sexual abuse inflicted on her by Glitter. The damages awarded total £508,800, with an additional sum for interest.
The court emphasized that the abuse had a severe impact on the victim’s life, with the damages covering lost earnings amounting to £381,000 and a provision of £7,800 for future therapy and treatment.
Richard Scorer from Slater and Gordon, who represents the claimant, expressed that while monetary compensation cannot fully address the trauma caused by the abuse, it at least acknowledges the devastation inflicted on his client throughout her life.
In response to the court’s ruling, Glitter, who did not engage in the legal proceedings, showcased a lack of remorse according to the claimant’s legal team. The judge highlighted the victim’s inability to work for several decades due to the abuse.
The court established that Glitter’s abuse led the victim to suffer mental health issues, dropping out of school, and altering her identity to cope with the trauma. His refusal to participate in the process solidifies his denial and lack of empathy toward the victim.
Gary Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was initially sentenced to 16 years in prison, being released in February last year after serving half his term before being re-incarcerated for breaching his license conditions. The Parole Board’s decision in January concluded that he was not fit for release.
