Pope Francis Releases New Encyclical ‘Dilexit Nos’ Emphasizing Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Pope Francis has released his fourth encyclical, titled “Dilexit Nos,” which translates to “He loved us” in Latin. Published on October 24, 2024, this document focuses on the renewal of authentic devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The encyclical is particularly significant as it coincides with the 350th anniversary of the visions of the Sacred Heart received by French nun Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque between 1673 and 1675.
In “Dilexit Nos,” Pope Francis argues that the spirituality of the Sacred Heart offers a profound response to the challenges of modern society, which is increasingly dominated by consumerism and technology. The Pope presents the heart of Jesus as a unifying principle in a world that is fragmented and divided. He emphasizes the importance of the heart as a symbol of core emotions and relationships, highlighting its role in understanding ourselves and showing kindness, especially to the marginalized.
The encyclical addresses several contemporary issues, including war, artificial intelligence, and consumerism. Pope Francis warns against both the rigidity of outdated structures and the obsessive reorganization of worldly projects, urging both conservatives and progressives to focus on the goals of compassion and unity within the Church. He stresses the need for constancy in the Church’s devotions and actions in an age marked by fluidity, change, and upheaval.
The document also includes inspiring quotes that reflect on the heart as the ultimate judge of our true selves, the basis for any sound life project, and the source of genuine encounters with others. Pope Francis encourages believers to maintain a fervent devotion to the Sacred Heart, emphasizing that this love can set us free from the pervasive consumerist culture and revive love in a world that often seems to have lost it.
