Narendra Modi East Asia Summit 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the significance of global peace and stability at the 19th East Asia Summit, held on Friday, October 10, 2024. During his address, he highlighted the need for concerted efforts to combat terrorism and reaffirmed India’s commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for national sovereignty.

Speaking in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, PM Modi underscored the stability of the South China Sea as crucial to the broader Indo-Pacific region. He stated, “A free, open, inclusive, prosperous, and rule-based Indo-Pacific is important for the peace and progress of the entire region. Peace, security, and stability of the South China Sea are in the interest of the entire Indo-Pacific region.”

Modi reiterated India’s support for ASEAN Unity and Centrality, stressing the alignment between India’s ‘Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative‘ and the ‘ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific.’ Addressing the ongoing issues in Myanmar, he called for adherence to ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and the importance of humanitarian assistance and democratic restoration, advocating for engagement rather than isolation.

In contexts of broader global conflicts, particularly in Eurasia and West Asia, Modi insisted that “This is not the era of war,” advocating for problem-solving through dialogue rather than battlefield conflicts. He expressed India’s dedication to international law and urged for a humanitarian approach.

During his speech, Modi condemned terrorism as a “serious challenge to global peace and security.” He urged global cooperation against terrorism, emphasizing the collective effort required from those “believing in humanity.” He also highlighted the importance of collaboration in cyber, maritime, and space sectors for assured security.

As part of his visit to Laos, Modi also attended the 21st ASEAN-India Summit, marking ten years of India’s Act East Policy. The Prime Minister was welcomed with a ceremonial reception and commemorated historical cultural ties between India and Laos, sharing his appreciation for a Lao Ramayan performance.

On a diplomatic note, PM Modi met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, expressing condolences over recent tragic events in the US. His engagements in Laos demonstrate a commitment to strengthening regional ties and fostering cultural exchanges.
