Protests in Los Angeles Against ICE Lead to Violence and Federal Raids

LOS ANGELES, CA — A series of protests against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intensified last week in response to federal immigration raids. Over 1,000 demonstrators took to the streets, resulting in violent clashes with law enforcement, arson, and vandalism.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), a nonprofit that receives substantial government funding, organized a rally criticizing ICE for its recent actions, which included the arrest of several illegal immigrants in the area. Officials report that CHIRLA received nearly $34 million in government grants in the fiscal year ending June 2023, a significant increase from the previous year. Additionally, a CHIRLA spokesperson denied any involvement in the violence, stating their intent was solely to protest the arrests.
The protests escalated into rioting on Friday as ICE began operations to enforce immigration laws previously implemented during the Trump administration. Supporters of the protests attempted to obstruct ICE from conducting these arrests, prompting law enforcement to employ tear gas and other crowd control measures. Bill Essayli, U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, confirmed that multiple arrests had taken place during the unrest.
In the midst of the chaos, California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the federal actions, claiming they used tactics that “sow terror” within communities. Trump responded to these statements, asserting that federal intervention was necessary due to state leaders’ inability to manage the situation.
The FBI is now investigating potential funding sources for the protests, with some lawmakers expressing concern about foreign influences. FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “The FBI is investigating any and all monetary connections responsible for these riots.”
Another group involved in the protests, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, has been linked to controversial funding from individuals with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, further complicating the narrative surrounding the demonstrations. The party has historically engaged in protests related to various social justice issues, including immigration.
