Series of Quakes Hit Near El Centro, Residents Report Night of Tremors
A sequence of earthquakes jolted the region near El Centro in San Diego County overnight, with the initial temblor registering a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The first quake struck just past midnight, about a mile north-northwest of El Centro and 2.3 miles north of Imperial, at a depth of approximately 11 miles, according to USGS records.
Residents in areas like Calexico, El Centro, and Brawley reported feeling the strongest shaking from the series of earthquakes, while some as far as Coronado in San Diego County experienced light tremors.
Following the 4.8 magnitude quake, nearly twenty more earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity, ranging in magnitudes between 2.5 and 4.5, with the latest being a 2.5 magnitude reported near the Interstate 5 around 9:30 a.m.
No injuries or damages have been reported thus far as a result of the seismic activities.
However, the initial quake did activate the Shake Alert system, which initially detected the event as a magnitude 5.0, prompting alerts to be sent out to residents in the surrounding areas.
