Francis Ngannou Eyes UFC Comeback, Coach Optimistic

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou may return to the Octagon for another title shot, according to his coach Eric Nicksick. After leaving the UFC in January 2023, Ngannou has been focused on boxing but is open to resuming his MMA career.
Ngannou’s departure from the UFC followed unsuccessful contract negotiations. He aimed for a multi-fight deal that balanced his interests in both boxing and MMA. Nicksick believes enough time has passed for Ngannou and the UFC to mend their relationship.
“I would love to see them mend these fences and get back to competing in the UFC,” Nicksick said in an interview. He emphasized that Ngannou’s motivations extend beyond money, stating, “It’s about competition. And the best competition is in the UFC.”
Ngannou held the heavyweight title from March 2021 until his exit. His last fight in the UFC was a decision win over Ciryl Gane. He has since fought only once, defeating a boxing opponent in October 2024.
As the heavyweight division currently faces stagnation with champion Jon Jones inactive, fans see Ngannou as a potential solution. Nicksick noted the value Ngannou brings, asserting “it can help bridge that gap that the UFC is lacking in its star power in the heavyweight division.”
While UFC CEO Dana White has criticized Ngannou, Nicksick remains hopeful that they can overcome past disputes for the benefit of both parties. “I think Dana is a smart-enough businessman. Why not explore those options?” Nicksick added.
Jon Jones, the current UFC champion, has also expressed interest in a potential matchup with Ngannou, recognizing the excitement such a fight would generate.
