Uconn Women's Basketball Home Opener Celebration

STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team opened its home season with a decisive 99-67 victory over Florida State on Sunday. This win marks the 35th consecutive season opener held at Gampel Pavilion.

Aubrey Griffin was a central figure in the celebration, returning to witness the unveiling of UConn‘s 2025 national championship banner. She was joined by nine current players from the title-winning roster for this momentous occasion. Fans were also treated to video messages from notable players Paige Bueckers and Kaitlyn Chen.

UConn (2-0) started slowly, missing seven of their first nine layup attempts. However, a late basket by Heckel allowed the Huskies to lead by 10 points at the end of the first quarter. Heckel was pivotal on defense during the second quarter, contributing five of UConn’s eight steals while teammates Strong and Fudd helped expand the lead during a stunning 12-0 run.

“Whenever we’re drawing up a play, one of the first two words out of my mouth is either Azzi or Sarah,” said UConn coach Geno Auriemma. “They’re going to be involved one way or another.” He emphasized the importance of their scoring ability and the attention they draw, which opens opportunities for other players.

Fudd capped a strong second quarter, scoring eight consecutive points during a 10-0 run that brought the halftime score to 51-27 in favor of UConn.

In the third quarter, UConn continued its dominance with a 15-0 run, bolstered by seven points from strong defensive player Heckel. Notably, Williams, a transfer from Wisconsin, marked her return to Gampel Pavilion by scoring her first basket since her injury sidelined her for two years.

UConn outscored Florida State 37-17 in bench points, showcasing their depth amidst the absence of Bueckers, who now plays for the Dallas Wings in the WNBA. The impressive bench performance signifies the team’s potential as they progress through the season.
