Alabama Wide Receiver Enters Transfer Portal Following Nick Saban’s Retirement
Alabama wide receiver, John Bond, has entered the transfer portal following the retirement of head coach Nick Saban, becoming the first Crimson Tide player to do so since Saban’s announcement. Bond, who was second on the team in receiving yards this season, with 668 and four touchdowns, will now have the opportunity to explore other options for the remaining two years of his eligibility. The NCAA rule allows players from teams that lose their head coach a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal without penalty, providing immediate eligibility. However, Bond may have to navigate the admissions process to enroll in a new school for the spring semester.
While Bond’s decision to enter the transfer portal does not guarantee his departure from Alabama, it opens up the possibility for him to explore other opportunities. He could choose to play for the new Crimson Tide coach, Kalen DeBoer, by withdrawing his name from the portal. Bond’s talent and experience make him an attractive prospect for other teams, and he is likely to receive significant interest from potential suitors.
Bond is not the only Alabama receiver considering their future. Jermaine Burton, who led the Tide in yards and touchdowns, has already announced his decision to turn pro instead of utilizing his fifth year of eligibility. Additionally, receivers Ja’Corey Brooks and Malik Benson had entered the transfer portal prior to Saban’s retirement, with Brooks transferring to Louisville and Benson to Florida State. The departure of these receivers makes Bond’s potential return even more crucial for the team.
If Bond decides to leave Alabama, the team will look to tight end Amari Niblack as their top returning receiver for the upcoming season. Niblack contributed 20 catches for 327 yards in the previous season.
