Alexis Vega Shines Ahead of CONCACAF Nations League Final Four

LOS ANGELES, CA – March 20, 2025 – Mexican forward Alexis Vega has been in peak form as the CONCACAF Nations League approaches the Final Four stage. After strong performances with Toluca during the Clausura 2025 season, he aims to replicate that success with the national team as they face Canada in the semifinals.
Under the leadership of new coach Javier Aguirre, who took over in late 2024, Vega has been eager to showcase his talent. Having participated in three matches since Aguirre’s appointment—including a friendly against the United States and two quarterfinal matches against Honduras—he’s earned another chance to prove himself in the upcoming match against Canada, which will determine a spot in the tournament final.
Vega’s call-up is largely due to his impressive statistics, having netted eight goals and provided six assists in the current Clausura league campaign, placing him among the top five scorers in the tournament. His performance is notable, as it surpasses his previous best of six goals in the previous season, making this his most productive league output since joining Toluca.
“I feel good and ready to contribute to the team. The support from my club and my recent performances have motivated me to perform at this level,” Vega stated. His scoring tally positions him as the highest-performing Mexican player in Liga MX this season, amid a competitive field of notable players.
Comparatively, Vega’s scoring numbers are not far behind those of his compatriots playing in European leagues. Raúl Jiménez of Fulham has scored ten goals in the Premier League, while Santi Giménez, formerly of Feyenoord and now with AC Milan, has seven goals in the Eredivisie and two in Serie A this season.
As Mexico prepares for its semifinal clash, Aguirre has remained tight-lipped about the starting lineup. Speculation suggests that Vega could start alongside established players like Raúl Jiménez, enhancing the team’s attacking options. “Every player will have a role. We have to be strategic against Canada,” Aguirre hinted during a press conference.
On the flip side of the roster, Jiménez has also been making headlines. Following a recent match against Canada, he became the second-highest goal scorer in Mexican national team history, scoring twice in the semifinal. With 37 goals, Jiménez is nearing the all-time third-place spot, overtaking Luis Hernández while still chasing Cuauhtémoc Blanco‘s 38 goals and the top spots held by Jared Borgetti and Javier Hernández.
“Every goal is a milestone. I am proud to represent my country and strive to lead this team to victory,” Jiménez remarked after his match.
Mexico’s journey to the Final Four has not been without challenges. The team rebounded from a significant 0-2 loss to Honduras in the quarterfinals by delivering a commanding 4-0 victory in the return leg held in Mexico City, showcasing their resilience and enhanced teamwork moving into the semifinals.
The match against Canada is set to take place at SoFi Stadium in California on March 23, 2025, at 9:30 PM ET, and the anticipation continues to build as the team looks to secure a place in the tournament’s finale. As they strategize their formation, Aguirre is expected to field a slightly refreshed squad while maintaining the core strengths that have brought them success.
