F1 Debut Season Andrea Kimi Antonelli

LONDON, England – Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 18-year-old rookie driver for Mercedes, shared insights into his challenging preparations for his debut Formula 1 season during a showcase at the O2 Arena. Despite the pressures of following in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli indicated that his main concern lay in passing the necessary driving tests.

“That week was like hell because I was really studying and practicing,” Antonelli told BBC Sport. “I knew I only had that shot. The preparations start and then the season starts, and I had no time to do the driving test again. So I was super happy to have passed straight away.”

Antonelli successfully passed his theory test in January, just six weeks before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix from March 14-16. He mentioned that he made one minor mistake on the exam but was allowed up to three errors. “But I had three allowed, so it was fine,” he added.

As the first event of a 24-race calendar approaches, Antonelli acknowledged the excitement and nerves involved in entering Formula 1 alongside George Russell as his teammate. “I was really nervous, first of all,” he said, reflecting on the emotions of preparing for such a prestigious racing series.

In a light-hearted moment, fellow rookie Oliver Bearman, 19, shared his own experience of learning to navigate the driving tests. He humorously recounted a mistake he made, saying, “I passed second time and I shouldn’t have said that. I didn’t stop at a stop sign.” Bearman noted the absence of such signs on race tracks during actual competitions, indicating the adjustment required for new drivers navigating both tests and races.

The O2 Arena event saw all 10 teams and 20 drivers present to showcase their new liveries ahead of the season. Creating excitement and anticipation among fans, the live show highlighted the competitive spirit that electrifies Formula 1 racing.

To compete in Formula 1, drivers must be at least 18 years old, hold a super licence issued by the FIA, but they are not required to possess a regular road licence. This unique qualification system emphasizes the specialized skills needed for professional racing.

The upcoming Australian Grand Prix marks the beginning of the season where Antonelli and his peers will aim to leave their mark on the sport.
