Andy Murray Returns with a Winning Comeback at Bordeaux Challenger Event
Former world number one Andy Murray marked his 37th birthday with a victorious comeback at the Bordeaux Challenger event, where his opponent Kyrian Jacquet retired in the second set. Murray, who had been sidelined due to an ankle injury since the Miami Open in March, was leading 7-5 2-0 when the Frenchman was forced to pull out.
The Scotsman’s injury had raised concerns about his participation at both the French Open and Roland Garros, but his quicker-than-expected recovery allowed him to return to the court for some clay-court matches ahead of the Grand Slam events.
Murray, a three-time grand slam winner, showed no signs of discomfort in his first match back on clay in over a year, securing a swift victory over Jacquet, albeit not in the way he would have ideally preferred.
On the women’s side at the Italian Open in Rome, world number two Karolina Pliskova advanced to the semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Jelena Ostapenko, setting up a clash with the retiring Serena Williams, who defeated Victoria Azarenka.
In the men’s competition, Alexander Zverev overcame a fall to beat Taylor Fritz, while Alejandro Tabilo continued his impressive run by reaching his first Masters semi-final with a win over Zhang Zhizhen, maintaining a flawless record without dropping a set.
