Anfield Breaks Its Attendance Record as Liverpool Faces Manchester City
Anfield, the iconic stadium of Liverpool FC, achieved a historic milestone on Sunday, setting a new record for its highest attendance during a league fixture as it welcomed Manchester City.
A staggering 59,947 passionate supporters filled the stands, creating an electric atmosphere for the thrilling Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City, which ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.
This remarkable figure surpasses the previous record of 59,896 attendees, which was set during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Burnley back in February.
Before that, the highest league attendance at Anfield stood at 58,757, dating back to a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in 1949.
While this league fixture saw Anfield’s capacity pushed to its limits, the all-time attendance record at the stadium remains untouched.
The record still belongs to the unforgettable FA Cup encounter between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1952, where 61,905 spectators filled the stands to witness a thrilling 2-1 victory for the Reds.
