Angels Players Frustrated by Late Getaway Game Scheduling Decision

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels players are expressing frustration over their travel schedule as they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday evening. Instead of a standard day game, the Angels have opted for a 6:29 p.m. start, which puts them at a disadvantage ahead of their upcoming series against the Minnesota Twins.
The decision means the Angels will be flying to Minnesota after the game, likely arriving in the early morning hours. Players are concerned about the impact this schedule will have on their performance, especially as they face a day game against the Twins the following day.
“It’s not ideal for sure,” said Angels superstar Mike Trout. “I don’t know when we’re supposed to land, but it’s going to be early. And we’ve got to play that night. And the worst part about it is, the next day is a day game.”
Former All-Star closer Kenley Jansen echoed Trout’s concerns, stating, “I don’t think it’s healthy for anybody. To finish playing a night game like that and get in at six in the morning… it’s definitely not fair.”
This late start is part of a troubling trend for the Angels. This season, they are known for scheduling late getaway games, which many other teams tend to avoid, especially when traveling across time zones. In 2019, for instance, the Angels played 11 of their 13 weekday getaway games at night.
“I don’t think it should be allowed, to be honest,” outfielder Taylor Ward added. “There should be rules in place to prevent that. Because it’s kind of crazy.”
A team spokesperson defended the scheduling choice, citing the priority of fan convenience and attendance revenue. However, some players feel that the management’s decision is detrimental to their well-being and chances to compete effectively.
The management’s reasoning behind the late start remains unclear, as both club president John Carpino and owner Arte Moreno declined to comment on specific scheduling questions. The final game against the Pirates could impact player performance significantly, as the Angels will face the Twins after an exhausting overnight travel.
This situation highlights concerns regarding player health and equity in the league, as Trout and his teammates continue to navigate a challenging schedule with hopes of competing better this season.
