Arizona Cardinals Release Quarterback Desmond Ridder Amid Roster Cuts
The Arizona Cardinals have officially announced the release of veteran quarterback Desmond Ridder as the team begins its 53-man roster cuts.
Ridder, who was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, had been competing for the backup role behind starter Kyler Murray. His recent performance, which included completing 10 of 16 passes for 111 yards in a preseason game against the Denver Broncos, was overshadowed by earlier inconsistencies and turnovers.
During the preseason, Ridder completed 20 of 35 passes for a total of 225 yards across three games. However, a late hit in the Broncos game raised concerns as he was placed in concussion protocol, though he has since cleared it.
Despite the trade from the Falcons, it became evident that Ridder’s performance did not meet the expectations set for the backup quarterback position, opening the door for Clayton Tune. Tune demonstrated notable improvement throughout the offseason, securing his position behind Murray.
This development follows a period of struggle for Ridder, who had been criticized for his decision-making and ball security in previous seasons. The Cardinals’ decision to retain Tune reflects a shift in their roster strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season.
