Arizona Claims $113M Mega Millions Jackpot; Thousands Win Smaller Prizes

CLEVELAND — A single ticket sold in Arizona matched all six numbers to win the $113 million Mega Millions jackpot in the Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, drawing. While the grand prize was claimed, thousands of players across the country, including Ohio, won smaller prizes.

The winning numbers for the drawing were 8, 10, 37, 54, 69, and the Mega Ball was 22. The Megaplier option, which multiplies non-jackpot prizes, was 3x. The jackpot now resets to $20 million, with a cash option of $8.9 million. The next drawing will take place at 11 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Lottery officials emphasize the slim odds of winning the jackpot, which stand at 1 in 302,575,350. Despite the low probability, Mega Millions continues to draw millions of hopeful players. In Ohio alone, numerous participants won smaller prizes, ranging from $2 for matching just the Mega Ball to thousands of dollars for matching multiple numbers.

This win follows a historic streak of lottery rollovers, including a $1.22 billion jackpot claimed in California on Dec. 27, 2024. That prize marked the fifth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. The game has seen 12 jackpots surpass $1 billion, with only one exceeding $2 billion.

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 each, and drawings occur twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays. Players in Florida, for example, must claim prizes within 180 days of the drawing, with cash option claims requiring action within the first 60 days.

Florida law mandates public disclosure of winners’ names, though those claiming prizes of $250,000 or more can temporarily remain anonymous for 90 days. Lottery experts suggest legal strategies for winners seeking to protect their privacy.

As of Jan. 17, 2025, the largest Mega Millions jackpot remains the $1.602 billion prize won on Aug. 8, 2023, by Saltines Holdings LLC in Florida. Other notable wins include a $1.537 billion prize in South Carolina in 2018 and a $1.348 billion prize in Maine in 2023.
