Australian Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold Signs with Portland Thorns in Landmark NWSL Move
Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold has inked a significant deal with the Portland Thorns in a landmark move within the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Arnold, who represented the Matildas, Australia’s national team, joins the Thorns after a successful four-season stint at West Ham United in England. The seasoned goalkeeper’s signing with the Thorns marks her return to the NWSL, having previously had a brief spell with the Chicago Red Stars back in 2019.
Arnold’s move to Portland comes at a pivotal time, with the goalkeeper poised to represent Australia at the upcoming Olympics. Her agreement with the Thorns extends through the 2026 season, with a mutual option for 2027, showcasing a long-term commitment to the NWSL outfit.
Karina LeBlanc, the General Manager and President of Soccer Operations at Portland Thorns, expressed her excitement at adding Arnold to the team’s roster. LeBlanc emphasized the club’s focus on fostering competition and aiming for championship success, highlighting Arnold’s international experience and goalkeeping prowess as key assets for the Thorns.
Currently placed fifth in the NWSL standings, the Portland Thorns have enjoyed a resurgence in form after a slow start to the season. With the acquisition of Arnold, the team boasts a goalkeeping unit that includes talented individuals like Emily Alvarado, Shelby Hogan, and Lauren Kozal, under the guidance of goalkeeping coach Jordan Franken.
