Boomers Face Challenges Ahead of Olympic Opener Against Spain
Australian basketball star Andrew Bogut has shared his worries about the team’s lack of a clear starting lineup as they prepare for a tough draw in the Olympic Games, often referred to as the ‘group of death’. The Boomers are set to face off against Canada, Greece, and Spain, all of whom are seen as strong competitors that could easily secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
On a recent episode of The Gold Standard podcast, Bogut expressed his concerns about the team’s formation, noting that there still isn’t a defined starting five. He mentioned, “One thing I’d probably say is a negative, the line-ups still aren’t clear. We still don’t have a really direct line to this is our five, these are the three or four main guys off the bench, these five guys are finishing games.”
Coach Brian Goorjian has been experimenting with different combinations up to the last minute before the tournament kicks off. Bogut pointed out how players like Joey Ingles have had fluctuating playing time, which adds to the uncertainty of who will play in crucial moments. “That’s the only concern I have is who’s our go-to line-up when the chips fall down,” he added.
Another issue facing the Boomers is the potential loss of key player Dante Exum early in the games. Brad Newley remarked, “Missing Dante early is a huge out and will have a huge impact.” Bogut weighed in, mentioning that keeping Exum might be risky given his recovery timeline from an injury. He stressed, “I mean, finger through the skin – I’m not great with laceration timelines, but I think you’re at least a week, if not more.”
The Boomers are gearing up to take on Spain, a team that has been a challenging opponent in the past. Bogut recalled how Spain has been a bit of a bogey team for Australia, saying, “The lucky bounce, the phantom referee call, a guy who hits a tough shot, we miss a wide-open shot. It just always happens against Spain for us.” Despite the hesitation about the lineup, Bogut believes the Boomers can start strong in their Olympic campaign.
The match is set to tip off at 7 pm AEST on Saturday, July 27. With so much on the line, basketball fans in Australia are looking forward to seeing how the Boomers fare against this formidable opponent.
