Cavs Prepare as Mitchell Returns; Mobley Out Against Magic

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to welcome back star guard Donovan Mitchell for their matchup against the Orlando Magic on Sunday, following a two-game absence due to left groin soreness. However, the team will be without forward Evan Mobley, who is sidelined with a right foot contusion suffered in the previous game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Mitchell’s return comes at a crucial time, as the Cavaliers aim to maintain their impressive momentum in the Eastern Conference, bolstered by a 16-game winning streak. Cleveland currently holds the top seed, and the team has exercised caution with injuries as they look toward the postseason.
“We feel comfortable with where Donovan is at with his progression,” head coach Kenny Atkinson said during a media briefing. “It’s important for us to have our All-Stars healthy as we approach the games that truly matter.”
In Mobley’s absence, which is described as day-to-day, Cleveland remains optimistic about protecting their core players heading into the playoffs. Atkinson emphasized the importance of team health, stating, “It’s not just about the talent; it’s about being available to each other on the court.”
Mitchell stayed behind in Cleveland while the team traveled to Nashville for practice, participating in individual non-contact workouts to ensure his readiness for the challenge against Orlando, who ranks among the top defenses in the league.
Orlando’s head coach, Jahmal Mosley, weighed in on the matchup, noting the differences between this year and last. “The Cavs have built unbelievable continuity and depth this season,” he said. “When they have their core players healthy, they can really challenge anyone.”
Meanwhile, the Magic are entering the game following a 118-111 defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves and are looking to recover quickly. Paolo Banchero has emerged as one of the standout players for Orlando, posting 43 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Bucks also face questions with their injury report as they prepare for their own matchup against the Cavaliers, listing forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kyle Kuzma as probable to play. The Bucks are currently sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Cavaliers will host the Magic on Sunday afternoon, and with Mitchell returning and Mobley out, both teams are looking to solidify their playoff positioning ahead of the postseason.
