Clash for Dominance as América Hosts Millonarios in Key Match

CALÍ, Colombia — América de Cali is set to face Millonarios in a crucial match on April 16 at 20:30, aimed at maintaining their lead in the league standings. The team enters this second consecutive clásico following a scoreless draw against Nacional in Bogotá, with hopes of leveraging a four-match unbeaten streak that includes three victories and one draw.
Currently, América holds a slim one-point advantage over Millonarios, underscoring the importance of this encounter for both squads. ‘We are facing a match against América after two consecutive rival clásicos. Despite their travel fatigue, they are a team with the quality to compete at a high level. We’ve had our own challenges with injuries,’ said América’s head coach David González.
América will welcome the return of Santiago Giordana, which adds depth to their front line primarily led by the promising young striker Luis Marimón, who has netted three goals in five appearances. However, the team will have to devise a strategy to counter the absence of Juan Fernando Quintero, who was recently expelled from the last match.
In response to Quintero’s absence, González is likely to implement a more vertical style of play, potentially featuring Sebastián Navarro as a key player to enhance their offensive capabilities. ‘Our priority is to recover our collective playing style, which has served us well,’ commented coach Jorge Da Silva.
América has experienced impressive performances in previous matches within the Sudamericana tournament in Uruguay and domestically, illustrating their potential as a cohesive unit. However, Da Silva acknowledged the challenges faced in recent encounters. ‘It’s true the last match did not go as planned; we were erratic and lost easy balls,’ he said.
América’s top scorer, Holgado, who has tallied six goals in ten matches, is also cleared to return after recovering from a hamstring injury. Defender Eder Álvarez Balanta is available to contribute, further reinforcing the squad ahead of this pivotal clash.
Line-ups for the match include:
América: Jorge Soto, Yerson Candelo, Jean Pestaña, Brayan Medina, Marcos Mina, Rafael Carrascal, Álvarez Balanta, Sebastián Navarro, Cristian Barrios, Duván Vergara, Luis Ramos.
Millonarios: Álvaro Montero, Sander Navarro, Andrés Llinás, Jorge Arias, Danovis Banguero, Dewar Victoria, Nicolás Arévalo, Daniel Ruiz, Kevin Palacios, Neyser Villarreal, Luis Marimón.
