Clippers Stage Remarkable Comeback to Defeat Nets
The Los Angeles Clippers staged an impressive comeback on Sunday to secure a thrilling victory over the Brooklyn Nets at Crypto.com Arena. The Clippers, who had struggled offensively and defensively for most of the game, turned the tide in the final minutes with a dominant 22-0 run. This remarkable stretch saw them outscore the Nets 41-15 in the fourth quarter, sealing their victory.
At the halfway point of the regular season, the Clippers improved their record to 27-14, showcasing their contender status. James Harden led the Nets with 24 points, accompanied by 10 assists and five rebounds. Russell Westbrook provided a crucial spark off the bench, contributing 23 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Coach Tyronn Lue relied on a five-wing closing lineup consisting of Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and Norman Powell, in addition to Harden and Westbrook.
Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points, while Terance Mann added 13 to the team’s tally. The Clippers were able to shine even without injured starter Ivica Zubac, as backup centers Mason Plumlee and Daniel Theis were not utilized by Lue. These adjustments proved effective, as the Clippers outscored their opponents during periods when Plumlee and Theis were on the bench.
The game started with the Nets quickly gaining an 18-point lead, capitalizing on their sharp three-point shooting. However, the Clippers swiftly fought back, with Mann’s three-pointers and Westbrook’s stellar performance leveling the score at 18-all within minutes. Despite multiple rallies, the Clippers found themselves trailing again by 16 points in the second quarter, as their star players struggled to find their rhythm. Harden, George, and Leonard combined for only six made shots out of 22 attempts in the first half. The Nets took advantage of the Clippers’ struggles, outscoring them by 17 points during Harden’s playing time.
In the third quarter, the Clippers continued their uphill battle, with Westbrook’s finger-roll layup closing the gap to only nine points at 80-71. However, Brooklyn responded swiftly, with Spencer Dinwiddie immediately scoring a layup just three seconds after the Clippers’ basket. The fourth quarter showcased the resilience of both teams, as the Nets consistently answered the Clippers’ pushes to narrow the gap. Westbrook’s open-court dunk and Theis’ subsequent dunk brought the Clippers within seven points, but Brooklyn managed to respond with baskets of their own.
Ultimately, it was Brooklyn’s final stand, as the Clippers launched into their own dominant run. The victory showcased the Clippers’ potential as contenders in the NBA, despite their unfinished development.
