Courtland Sutton Launches Sweet Candy Amid Contract Extension Talks with Broncos

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton kicked off his promotional campaign for his new candy, Sutton Sours, on Saturday, just as he prepares to rejoin the team for offseason workouts.
Despite ongoing negotiations for a contract extension, Sutton expressed optimism about his future with the Broncos. “My team has had a really good conversation with the guys up there in the front office, and I think it’s working in the right direction,” Sutton said. “I’m open and optimistic about the fact that I’ll be able to be here for the rest of my career.”
This optimistic stance contrasts starkly with last offseason when Sutton opted out of Denver’s voluntary workouts. He made his return to training during the mandatory minicamp in June. At that time, he restructured his contract to include up to $1.7 million in incentives, which he capitalized on by delivering one of the best seasons of his career.
Last season, Sutton recorded 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns, showcasing his role as the top target for rookie quarterback Bo Nix. His impressive performance earned him a captaincy from his teammates for the fourth consecutive year and solidified his case for a contract extension.
Sutton, who signed a four-year, $60.1 million extension in November 2021, enters the final season of his deal, which has a base salary of $13.5 million for 2025. He currently holds no guaranteed money left on his contract, but this could change if negotiations for an extension are successful in the coming months.
Excitement surrounds Sutton as he looks forward to the Broncos’ offseason program. “The season we had last year was amazing, and leaning into that and wanting to build on that… I think the offseason is a big part of that,” Sutton said. “We have a quarterback, and knowing this is going to be our quarterback of the future is amazing.”
Head coach Sean Payton acknowledged Sutton’s intention to attend the offseason workouts but noted there is “no timeline” for an extension. General Manager George Paton indicated any discussions regarding contract extensions would come after the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 24-26.
The Broncos are poised to address multiple contract statuses, including Sutton’s, as players like defensive lineman Zach Allen and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto are also due for extensions. “Let’s get through the draft,” Paton said. “We’ll be open to conversations after the draft and into the summer.”
Meanwhile, Sutton relished his candy launch event, engaging with fans and signing autographs. “I love candy… It’s one of my Achilles’ heels for sure,” he remarked. “We went back and forth for a couple of weeks… it might have been more like a month trying to figure out what we liked.”
As undergraduate fans lined up for his new confection, Sutton cherished the moment, feeling good about the Broncos’ direction as they target a playoff return. His dedication and positive outlook will be instrumental as offseason workouts commence.
