PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State guard Cedric Coward has entered the NCAA transfer portal and declared for the 2025 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. This announcement was confirmed by Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6 senior played only six games in a WSU uniform after sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury during a practice in late November. Despite his limited appearances, Coward showcased his talent, averaging 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 55.7% from the field and 40% from three-point range. He also recorded a season-high 30 points in WSU’s second game of the season.

Coward’s performance included nearly achieving a triple-double against his former team, Eastern Washington, with 22 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, in what would be his final game as a Cougar.

Before joining WSU, Coward played two standout seasons at Eastern Washington under coach David Riley, after starting his career at Division III Willamette. His entry into the transfer portal follows the recent trend among NCAA athletes seeking greater opportunities through the ever-evolving landscape of college basketball.

By entering the NBA Draft, Coward will have the chance to work out with NBA teams and receive valuable feedback from scouts. He also may participate in the NBA G League Elite Camp or the NBA Draft Combine, showcasing his skills against top competitors.

To preserve his college eligibility, Coward must withdraw his name from the draft pool by June 15 at 2 p.m. Pacific time. In his two seasons at Eastern Washington, Coward appeared in 66 games, scoring a total of 743 points, recording 404 rebounds, 115 assists, 59 steals, and 51 blocks while being a unanimous selection to the All-Big Sky first team in 2023-24.

With Coward’s exit, Washington State faces the challenge of replacing its entire starting lineup for the second straight year. Coward is the fifth Cougar to enter the portal this offseason, joining LeJuan Watts, Isaiah Watts, Nate Calmese, and Marcus Wilson. Furthermore, seniors Ethan Price and Dane Erikstrup are also set to graduate, further complicating the team’s rebuilding efforts for the coming season.

As college basketball increasingly intertwines with lucrative NIL opportunities, Coward’s move appears strategically sound, potentially offering him a financial advantage in the current sports landscape.
