Wyoming Cowgirls Basketball Team Championship Match

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Wyoming Cowgirls are gearing up for the Mountain West Championship game against the San Diego State Aztecs tonight at 8:30 PM MT. Both teams come into this matchup with impressive winning streaks, as the Cowgirls have won their last six games, including a 57-45 victory over Fresno State in the semifinals.

This championship game marks a significant moment for both teams, particularly for San Diego State, which is appearing in the title game for the second consecutive year after upsetting top-seeded UNLV 71-59 in the semifinals. Wyoming and SDSU have faced off multiple times this season, with the Cowgirls winning both regular-season meetings, 78-71 at home on January 11 and 64-51 on February 8 in San Diego.

In the semifinal against Fresno State, the Cowgirls took an early lead, 11-2, and managed to maintain control throughout the game. They led by just one point at halftime, 24-23, but a strong third quarter helped them to a 44-34 lead heading into the final period. Wyoming’s performance was bolstered by Allyson Fertig, who had an outstanding game with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Teammates Malene Pedersen and Emily Mellema contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Assistant Head Coach Fallon Lewis expressed confidence ahead of the championship game, noting that the atmosphere should feel familiar for the Cowgirls due to their dedicated fan base traveling from Wyoming to support them in Las Vegas. Lewis highlighted the critical role of the senior leadership on the team, which was particularly vital in their latest win.

As the championship approaches, both teams will aim to capitalize on their defensive strengths and scoring abilities. The winner is expected to gain significant momentum heading into the NCAA tournament. Fans can catch the game broadcast live on CBS Sports Network or listen to the radio coverage on Bigfoot 99, with a pregame show beginning at 8 PM MT.
