Cubs Acquire Catcher Matt Thaiss from Angels in Latest Roster Move
The Chicago Cubs have made a significant move to bolster their catching depth by acquiring catcher Matt Thaiss from the Los Angeles Angels. The trade, announced on November 20, 2024, saw the Cubs send cash considerations to the Angels in exchange for Thaiss, who had been designated for assignment by the Angels last week.
Thaiss, 29, was a first-round pick by the Angels in 2016, selected 16th overall. Initially drafted as a corner infielder, he later transitioned back to catching in 2021 due to the Angels’ crowded infield and designated hitter positions. Despite showing promising offense in the minor leagues, Thaiss’s major league performance has been less impressive, with a career .208/.313/.342 line and 83 wRC+ in 771 plate appearances.
The move by the Cubs was necessitated by the need for a backup catcher to complement Miguel Amaya, who has emerged as a solid offensive option behind the plate after a swing change in July. Amaya’s performance since July 7 includes a .282/.331/.468 slash line with 6 home runs and 32 RBI. The Cubs aim to use a two-person tandem to keep Amaya fresh throughout the season.
To make room for Thaiss on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated right-hander Trey Wingenter for assignment. This move is part of a busy day for the Cubs, who also acquired right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians and designated Patrick Wisdom for assignment.
Thaiss brings a left-handed bat and average defensive skills to the Cubs. He has also played first base and third base in his career but is expected to primarily serve as a catcher. His ability to hit right-handed pitchers better than left-handed pitchers (.673 OPS vs. .566 OPS) makes him a valuable addition to the Cubs’ roster.
