Dallas Mavericks Eye Defensive Upgrades Amid Trade Rumors
DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly exploring trade options to bolster their defense as the NBA season heats up. On Friday, rumors surfaced that the team is considering moving center Daniel Gafford to acquire a defensive-minded wing player, a surprising shift given their reluctance to trade him just a month ago.
Gafford, who has been a key contributor for the Mavericks this season, has stepped up as the starting center in the absence of Dereck Lively II, who is recovering from an ankle sprain. Gafford’s performance has been inconsistent, but he delivered a standout game on Wednesday, scoring 27 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Despite his contributions, the Mavericks are reportedly open to trading him if it means securing a defensive ace to strengthen their playoff push.
“Having a surplus of perimeter defenders is crucial in the postseason,” said one league insider. “The Mavericks know this well after seeing how Derrick Jones Jr. impacted their playoff run last year.”
One name frequently linked to the Mavericks is Matisse Thybulle, a versatile defender currently with the Portland Trail Blazers. Dallas showed strong interest in Thybulle during the 2023 offseason, but Portland matched their offer sheet. Although Thybulle has been sidelined with injuries this season, his defensive prowess and versatility make him an attractive target for the Mavericks.
Another potential target is Herbert Jones of the New Orleans Pelicans. Jones, who finished in the top five for Defensive Player of the Year last season, is averaging a career-high 1.9 steals per game this year. However, he is currently out indefinitely with a torn labrum in his shoulder, which could complicate any potential trade discussions.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls‘ Patrick Williams has also emerged as a possible option. The 23-year-old forward is in the first year of a five-year, $90 million contract and offers defensive versatility and 3-point shooting. Despite a dip in efficiency this season, Williams’ potential and youth make him an intriguing fit for the Mavericks’ young core.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Mavericks are weighing their options carefully. “The right trade could give us the jolt we need,” said a team source. “We’re looking for someone who can make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.”
With injuries and inconsistent play plaguing the team, the Mavericks are under pressure to make a move that could solidify their playoff aspirations. Whether it’s Thybulle, Jones, Williams, or another player, Dallas is determined to find the missing piece to their defensive puzzle.
