INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Darius Garland is poised to be a pivotal player for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they embark on their NBA playoff journey against the Miami Heat. Game 1 of the first-round series begins Sunday, marking a crucial moment for the Cavs as they aim to advance further than they did in previous postseason appearances.

As discussions heat up regarding whether it is Garland or teammate Evan Mobley who will face greater scrutiny this postseason, all eyes are on Garland, who seeks to solidify his place as a reliable playoff performer. Last year’s playoffs left fans yearning for a signature moment from him, while Mobley already hinted at his potential during a standout performance in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

This season has seen Garland return to form after describing the previous year as the worst of his life. However, the numbers reflect a player who remains more familiar than evolved, reminiscent of his All-Star seasons in 2022 and 2023. Coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized the need for Garland to accelerate his growth and maturity-level to meet championship expectations.

“You’re 25, and I need you to be 28,” said Atkinson on Thursday, highlighting the urgency for Garland to elevate his game amidst the pressure of the playoffs.

Garland possesses undeniable offensive flair, including smooth ball-handling and captivating passing that entertains Cavs fans. Yet, Atkinson underscored that the true distinction between elite players in the playoffs often lies in their steadiness and resilience under pressure.

Recalling a moment during an intrasquad scrimmage when Garland argued with a referee, Atkinson noted, “There’s going to be a lot more of that in the playoffs. How are we going to react?” He pointed out that maintaining focus after adversity is essential for Garland’s success.

Garland himself is aware of the stakes, expressing a desire to play with confidence and physicality against the tough Miami team. “This is the best part of the year,” he said. “Winning the championship, bringing one back to Cleveland. That’s the only picture I can think of right now.”

Expectation hangs over the series, especially as Miami’s coaching staff will likely target Garland defensively, testing his ability to handle pressure throughout the series.

Despite experiencing challenges last year after suffering an injury, Garland now aims to prove he can be the player the Cavs count on to handle the tense playoff environment. As Atkinson stated, “We need him to be great. Not good, great.”

The journey towards a championship will not solely rely on Garland’s offensive capabilities. It’s also about managing his emotions and maintaining focus, avoiding distractions that can derail a successful playoff run.

“It’s about the next-play mentality,” Atkinson reiterated. “We’ve talked about it all year, and Garland needs to internalize that.”

Garland’s teammate Tristan Thompson emphasized the importance of the pressure that comes with playoff basketball, stating, “If we want to get through this first round quickly, we need Garland to dominate.”

Garland concluded with a reflection on the ultimate goal for the season: “Winning the ring is the only thing that’s successful,” reaffirming his commitment to leading the Cavs on this formidable journey.
