DETROIT, Michigan – The Anaheim Ducks acquired goaltender Ville Husso from the Detroit Red Wings on February 25, 2025, in exchange for future considerations, the team announced. This move comes after Ducks’ starting goaltender suffered an injury in a recent game.

Husso, 30, has had a challenging season thus far, with a 1-5-2 record, a 3.69 goals-against average, and an .866 save percentage from his nine appearances with the Red Wings this season. He was first sent to the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls as management looks to manage the goaltending situation effectively.

Despite a rocky start to the current season, Husso’s potential as a goaltender remains intriguing. In the 2022-23 season, he appeared in a career-high 56 games with the Red Wings, posting 26 wins. He also had a successful stint at the AHL level this season with Grand Rapids, where he recorded an 8-4-0 record, a 2.70 goals-against average, and two shutouts in 13 games.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman indicated that the trade, which frees up some cap space, was not solely about Husso’s performance. “We’re focused on our plans leading up to the trade deadline, and this move gives us additional flexibility,” Yzerman stated.

Husso started his NHL career after being selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has compiled a career record of 70-45-18, with a 3.05 goals-against average and an .901 save percentage over 141 games with the Blues and Red Wings.

Before joining the NHL, Husso played three seasons in the Finnish SM-Liiga, where he stood out, culminating in being named the league’s top goaltender in his final season. Internationally, he has represented Finland in several championships, securing a gold medal at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.

As the trade deadline approaches on March 7, it remains to be seen how the Ducks will utilize Husso moving forward, particularly as they look to stabilize their goaltending situation.
