Eddie Howe Hospitalized with Pneumonia, Misses Upcoming Matches

NEWCASTLE, England — Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been hospitalized with pneumonia and will miss the club’s next two matches. The announcement was made on April 14, 2025, shortly after the 47-year-old was admitted to the hospital following his absence during the team’s recent 4-1 victory over Manchester United.
Howe expressed gratitude to fans for their messages of support, stating they “meant a lot” to him during this challenging time. He also paid tribute to the NHS and the hospital staff involved in his care.
The club confirmed that Howe will be sidelined for Wednesday’s match against Crystal Palace and Saturday’s game against Aston Villa as he continues his recovery.
Pneumonia, as defined by the NHS, is an inflammation of the lungs usually caused by an infection. Symptoms can vary widely and may appear suddenly or gradually, including coughing with yellow or green mucus, shortness of breath, high temperature, chest pain, body aches, fatigue, decreased appetite, wheezing, and confusion.
The NHS advises individuals to seek medical assistance if they have a cough lasting more than three weeks, are coughing up blood, experience chest pain, or have difficulty breathing.
In most cases, pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics, leading to recovery within two to four weeks. However, more severe cases—often seen in very young patients, those over 65, or individuals with pre-existing health conditions like cardiovascular disease—may require hospital treatment.
During hospitalization, pneumonia patients typically receive fluids and antibiotics, along with supplemental oxygen to aid in breathing.
Newcastle United tweeted their support for Howe, saying, “Get well soon, gaffer 🫶.” The club is hopeful for his swift recovery as he navigates this health challenge.
