Mason’s breakout performance came early in the season when McCaffrey was sidelined with bilateral Achilles tendonitis. “Jordan Mason proved he can be a quality starter in this league,” said Grant Cohn, a longtime 49ers analyst. “But with McCaffrey’s contract and the depth they have, it might be tough for the 49ers to justify paying Mason that kind of money.”

If the 49ers place a second-round tender on Mason, another team could sign him by surrendering a second-round draft pick. However, if no team matches the offer, San Francisco would be on the hook for Mason’s salary, which could strain their cap space. The 2025 NFL Draft also features a deep class of running backs, providing the 49ers with alternative options.

Despite the financial challenges, Mason’s value to the team cannot be overlooked. His ability to step up in McCaffrey’s absence demonstrated his importance as a reliable backup. “Mason saved the 49ers early in the season,” Cohn added. “But with the way the NFL works, it’s hard to keep everyone you want.”
