49ers Face Uncertainty with Brock Purdy’s Injury, Backup QB Options Limited
The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with uncertainty at the quarterback position as Brock Purdy‘s status for their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers remains tenuous. Purdy, who suffered an injured right (throwing) shoulder during the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, has been limited in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday.
If Purdy is unable to play, the 49ers will have to rely on their backup quarterbacks. Currently, the team’s backup options include Brandon Allen, who was named the backup in September, Joshua Dobbs, and Tanner Mordecai, who is on the practice squad.
Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs have a combined career win-loss record of 5-18, which raises concerns about the team’s depth at the quarterback position. Despite these numbers, the 49ers are hopeful that Purdy will make sufficient progress to play on Sunday, given his significant impact on the team’s performance over the past seasons.
The 49ers’ general manager, John Lynch, expressed cautious optimism about Purdy’s recovery, stating that while the MRI results were positive, the decision to play would depend on Purdy’s ability to operate effectively during practice. Coach Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers is preparing his team for the possibility of facing Purdy, highlighting his respect for Purdy’s skills as a quarterback.
