ENCINO, Calif. — A wrong-way crash on the 405 Freeway in Encino early Tuesday morning resulted in at least one death and prompted the complete closure of all southbound lanes.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the accident shortly after 4 a.m. at Valley Vista Boulevard. Preliminary reports indicate that multiple vehicles were involved in the collision, with some strewn across the freeway.
Witnesses reported extensive damage to the vehicles involved, and aerial footage from AIR7 showed debris scattered over several lanes. The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation, and authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the accident.
One person died at the scene, while another individual was transported to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries. The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The crash caused significant traffic delays, with backups extending to the 118 Freeway as motorists were forced to find alternative routes. By approximately 8:30 a.m., officials had reopened three lanes, allowing some traffic to gradually resume.
As the investigation continues, the California Highway Patrol urges drivers to remain alert and follow traffic laws to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. Additional updates will be released as more information becomes available.
