Four-Star Defensive End Zahir Mathis Decommits From Ohio State
Zahir Mathis, a highly touted four-star defensive end from Philadelphia‘s Imhotep Institute, has announced his decision to decommit from Ohio State. Mathis had been committed to the Buckeyes since January 10, 2024, but on Monday, he revealed on Twitter that he will be reopening his recruitment.
Mathis, who stands at 6-foot-6 and weighs 225 pounds, is ranked as the No. 67 overall prospect in the 2025 class and the No. 5 edge rusher according to 247Sports composite rankings. He is also the No. 10 EDGE and No. 3 recruit in Pennsylvania, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
During his recruitment, Mathis had taken official visits to both Ohio State and Penn State, with the Nittany Lions being a persistent suitor. Penn State coach James Franklin and his staff have been actively trying to flip Mathis since his initial commitment to Ohio State.
The decommitment of Mathis is a significant blow to Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class, which was previously ranked as the No. 1 class before his decision. The Buckeyes now have five defensive linemen committed, including Zion Grady, Trajen Odom, Jarquez Carter, Maxwell Roy, and London Merritt. However, Ohio State is also facing challenges in retaining other commits, such as four-star linebacker Tarvos Alford and five-star cornerback Na’eem Offord, who are being targeted by other schools.
Mathis expressed his appreciation for the coaches at Ohio State and stated that the school remains a top option for him. His decision to reopen his recruitment has opened up possibilities for other top programs, including Penn State, Georgia, Texas, and Colorado, among others.
