Freeze Warning in Houston as Temperatures Drop to 27 Degrees
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory have been issued for Southeast Texas, including Houston, as temperatures are expected to drop to 27 degrees early Monday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that wind chills could plunge to 14 degrees, with the advisory remaining in effect until 11 a.m.
Areas affected include Houston, The Woodlands, College Station, Pearland, and surrounding communities. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect plants, pets, and exposed plumbing from freezing conditions. The NWS advises wearing hats and gloves when venturing outside and ensuring outdoor animals have adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
According to the NWS, a Freeze Warning is issued when temperatures are forecasted to drop below 32°F for an extended period, which can kill commercial crops and residential plants. A Cold Weather Advisory is issued when seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chills are expected, though not extremely cold values.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch through Friday due to the arctic air. Despite the alert, ERCOT says grid conditions are expected to be normal, and no action is needed from customers. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas stated that more than 10,000 megawatts have been added to the Texas grid since last winter, improving reliability.
Local organizations like Star of Hope are stepping up to help those experiencing homelessness during the cold snap. The organization is distributing coats, hats, and blankets starting Monday afternoon and is accepting donations of new or gently-used cold-weather gear at their downtown and Reed Road locations.
As Texans brace for the freeze, ERCOT continues to monitor grid conditions closely, assuring residents that no energy emergencies are anticipated. Texans can stay informed about grid conditions through ERCOT’s website or by subscribing to emergency alerts.
