Georgia RB Branson Robinson First to Enter Transfer Portal This Spring

ATHENS, Ga. — Branson Robinson, a running back for the Georgia Bulldogs, has officially declared his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal, making him the first player from Georgia to do so in the spring transfer window. His decision comes following a challenging period of injuries that limited his playing time during his tenure with the team.
Robinson, who stands at 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 220 pounds, was a highly touted recruit when he joined Georgia as a four-star player in the Class of 2022. He was considered the top running back in the state of Georgia and the second-best in his class nationally, according to On3’s recruiting rankings.
During his two seasons on the field, Robinson accumulated 93 carries for 403 yards and six touchdowns. His performance was significantly hindered, however, by injuries, including a torn patellar tendon that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season and an MCL injury early in the 2024 season.
As the spring transfer portal window opened earlier this week, players now have a 10-day period to enter their names into the portal. This window is particularly tense for teams as they await possible transfer announcements from their rosters.
Robinson’s departure could provide an opportunity for rising stars at Georgia. Nate Frazier is expected to take on a larger role as the lead running back, while others like Roderick Robinson and Cash Jones have also shown promise. Head Coach Kirby Smart has expressed enthusiasm about the development of freshman Bo Walker and returning sophomores Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips.
“I’m excited for those two (Bo Walker and Chauncey Bowens),” Smart said during a press conference. “They both got better in the spring. I thought our backs had a good spring practice.”
With Robinson’s talent now available in the transfer portal, potential suitors may emerge quickly. Programs such as Clemson, North Carolina, Miami, and Colorado are reportedly among those interested in recruiting him. Given his previous accolades, his next destination could play a crucial role in reviving his college football career.
As college football continues to adapt to the dynamics of the transfer portal, Robinson’s announcement marks a significant shift for the Bulldogs. His decision has sparked conversations about how teams manage talent amid a rapidly evolving landscape of player movement.
“I don’t know that there’s anything anybody can do to reign it in,” Smart added, reflecting on the challenges of team management in an era defined by player transfers. “You have to manage the culture as good as you can and focus on the players who want to be here.”
