Giants Target Stafford, Raiders Eye Quarterback in 2025 Mock Draft

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 26, 2025 — As the NFL Scouting Combine ramps up this week, the focus has shifted to the potential trade moves affecting quarterback positions across the league. Centering the conversation is the New York Giants, who are reportedly prioritizing a trade for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford from the Los Angeles Rams.
With analysts suggesting that the upcoming draft class lacks depth at quarterback, many teams, including the Giants, find themselves looking for proven signal-callers. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, it is evident that the Giants have singled Stafford out as their prime target. The team reportedly met with Stafford’s representatives at the combine, seeking to negotiate a restructured deal for the quarterback.
“It’s pretty clear the Giants have made Stafford their top priority at quarterback,” Raanan noted. “Given they only have Tommy DeVito signed through 2025, they are looking for immediate upgrades.”
The Giants’ general manager, Joe Schoen, emphasized the importance of having a veteran presence alongside a young quarterback to shepherd their development.
“Even if you get a young quarterback, you’d like to have a vet in the room with them to show them the ropes and how to be a pro,” Schoen said.
The negotiations between the Giants and the Rams hinge on Stafford’s hefty contract; he is seeking more than $50 million next season. This situation gives the Giants a unique opportunity to engage in talks, particularly as the Rams allow Stafford’s agent to explore other teams.
In a related trade proposal, the Giants could part with their third overall pick in exchange for Stafford, alongside additional draft compensation, including a sixth-round pick. Meanwhile, this mock draft scenario extends to the Minnesota Vikings, who are likely to trade for Sam Darnold from the Rams, paving the way for J.J. McCarthy to take over in Minneapolis.
Meanwhile, the combine is brimming with talent. The upcoming draft is projected to feature impactful players, with Abdul Carter of Penn State being a standout prospect. With the heightened trades and movement within the draft, teams are eager to solidify their rosters.
As the combine unfolds, teams will not only assess potential draft picks but also strategize for the impending free agency period, which starts on March 12. The Titans, for instance, are speculated to seek quarterback help with the top pick, although they may pursue a pass-rusher like Carter if they trade down.
The consequences of these trades, particularly the potential move involving Stafford, will be felt far beyond the draft day. With his significant experience and leadership potential, acquiring him could dramatically change the Giants’ season and direction moving forward.
