Innocent Maela Orlando Pirates 200 Appearances

Commitment, consistency, and loyalty have led to another milestone for Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela, who marked his 200th appearance for the club with a victory over Chippa United, winning 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The 32-year-old defender was introduced late in the Buccaneers’ Betway Premiership opener, becoming part of an exclusive group of players who have represented the team over 200 times. His journey with Orlando Pirates began with his first-team debut against Lamontville Golden Arrows in October 2017, and reaching this milestone is a testament to his dedication and loyalty to the club.

Reflecting on his path from the Academy to the First Team, Maela shared his surprise at this achievement. “When I joined the Academy, my first goal was to improve as a player as much as I can. I didn’t even think that one day I’d be playing for the first team,” he told orlandopiratesfc.com. “To get the opportunity to represent the Club so many times has been an honour to me and a privilege.”

Maela’s career includes many memorable moments, such as scoring against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby and being entrusted with the captaincy. “Becoming the Club’s captain was a huge milestone for me and an honour to be voted by my teammates,” Maela said.

In his role as captain and senior player, Maela is committed to mentoring younger talents within the Club. “I think for me it’s to help the younger players as much as I can, to help my teammates when they need me, and to contribute as much as I can to the team,” Maela added.
