Jackie Chan Supports New Oscar Category for Stunt Design

LOS ANGELES, CA – Jackie Chan has weighed in on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ decision to introduce a Best Stunt Design Oscar, applauding the move as long overdue.
The announcement came last month, yet the award will not be presented until the 100th Academy Awards. Chan, a legendary figure in the action film industry, expressed his hopes for the category’s impact on the industry and the recognition of stunt professionals.
“We’ve been wanting that for so many years,” Chan said. “I’ve been participating in many movie awards, and I see actors like Robert De Niro and Tom Hanks recognized for their work. But no action stars get the same acknowledgment.”
The actor pointed out that despite films like “Mad Max: Fury Road” winning multiple Oscars, major categories often overlook the contributions of stunt performers. “It’s about all action – stunt guys, coordinators, and action stars. Movies with action travel globally, yet they don’t get nominated for major honors,” he stated.
Chan, known for his incredible stunts and choreography, also won an Academy Honorary Award in 2016, recognizing his influence in connecting global audiences with action films. He believes this new category could pave the way for greater exploration of the action genre within the Academy.
Many in the film community echo Chan’s sentiments, believing that this recognition is a step forward in honoring all aspects of filmmaking.
As the industry eagerly awaits the inaugural Best Stunt Design award, fans are left to wonder what it could mean for the future of action films.
