Joe Hendry Dethrones Nic Nemeth to Claim TNA World Title at Genesis 2025
GARLAND, Texas — Joe Hendry made history Sunday night at TNA Genesis 2025, defeating Nic Nemeth to become the TNA World Champion in a dramatic match filled with twists and turns. The event, held at the Curtis Culwell Center, marked Hendry’s third attempt at the title, following previous losses at Slammiversary and Bound For Glory 2024.
Hendry, now the third British wrestler to hold the TNA World Championship, secured the victory after hitting Nemeth with a second Standing Ovation finisher. The match was not without controversy, as outside interference threatened to derail the contest. Frankie Kazarian, the Call Your Shot Gauntlet winner, attempted to insert himself into the match, only to be taken out by WWE Hall of Famer John Layfield (JBL), who also knocked out Nemeth’s brother, Ryan, at ringside.
Nemeth, who had held the title for 183 days after winning it in a six-man elimination match at Slammiversary, expressed confidence heading into the bout. In a pre-event interview, he stated, ‘I’m ready to fight Joe Hendry, and I just don’t think he’s on my level.’ However, Hendry proved otherwise, delivering a hard-fought performance that culminated in his championship victory.
The match featured several high spots, including a top-rope Fallaway Slam by Hendry and a near-fall after Nemeth’s Danger Zone. Ultimately, Hendry’s resilience and determination paid off, as he celebrated with his family and the TNA fans in attendance.
JBL’s involvement added an unexpected layer to the event. Earlier in the week, Nemeth had speculated about JBL’s intentions, saying, ‘Maybe he’s building a team. Maybe he’s turning on everyone and has some other aspect.’ While JBL’s actions during the match were decisive, his long-term role in TNA remains unclear.
Hendry’s victory marks a significant milestone in his career and a new chapter for TNA. As the 36th wrestler to hold the TNA World Championship, he now carries the responsibility of leading the promotion into its next era.
