Josh Freese Foo Fighters Drummer Announcement

LOS ANGELES, CA – Josh Freese announced on May 16, 2025, that he was let go as the drummer for the Foo Fighters after only two years with the band. Freese shared the news on his Instagram account, expressing shock and disappointment at the sudden decision.

Freese stated that he received a call on May 12 informing him that the band decided to go in a “different direction” with their drummer, although no specific reason was provided. In his post, he expressed gratitude for the time he spent with the band, stating, “I support whatever they feel is best for the band.”

Throughout his professional career of over 40 years, Freese mentioned he had never been dismissed from a band before, describing the news as surprising rather than angering. He added a touch of humor, teasing fans with a future list titled “Top 10 Possible Reasons Josh Got Booted From the Foo Fighters.”

Many fans and musicians rallied around Freese, showing their support in the comments section of his post. Notable responses included drummer and producer, who wrote, “Say what? Why for playing everything not only perfectly but going above and beyond what most are remotely capable of?” This sentiment echoed the shock of others in the industry.

Freese joined the Foo Fighters in 2023 following the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins. His tenure was notable as he had also performed with the band during the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts. With a diverse background that includes stints with Nine Inch Nails and Guns N' Roses, Freese was considered a perfect fit by fans.

Although the Foo Fighters have not publicly commented on Freese’s dismissal, they have upcoming performances planned, including a show at the Singapore Grand Prix on October 4, 2025. The band’s future direction remains unclear, particularly following the sudden change in drummers.

This unexpected development has left both fans and industry associates wondering about the reasons behind Freese’s departure from the band, especially given his positive impact during his time with them.
